Witherslack
Woods is a large expanse of semi-natural woodland in the local
area |
 |
Coppicing
encourages more light to the woodland floor providing a breeding
habitat for a range of butterfly species including the High
Brown Fritillary (endangered and protected by law) and the Pearl-bordered
Fritillary (nationally scarce) |

English Heritage |
 |
The
famous East window of St Martin's Church, the parish church
of Bowness-on-Windermere built in 1483, has some of the oldest
coloured glass in England |
 |
Sections
of the window, obtained from Cartmel Priory, pre-date the church
- of particular note the green figure of the Virgin and Child
which dates from 1260 |
 |
English
Heritage entrusted the restoration of the window to the York
Glaziers Trust, who are among the foremost specialists in this
field |
 |
A
donation towards the Millennium Appeal for the restoration of
the window was provided by tax credits from James Cropper plc |
 |
Restoration
commenced in September 2001 and took a year to complete
